For a number of years WisCOSH, along with other COSHes and worker advocates, has been attempting to bring more awareness to the tragedy of workplace deaths and work related illnesses that impact worker’s quality and often longevity of life and Workers’ Memorial Day. We do this because workplace tragedy is all too often unreported or never gets any followup on cause(s) and actions to prevent its recurrence. There is also little repercussion faced by employers that have been required for more than 50 years to protect their workers from serious injury, illness and death.
This year WisCOSH is once again inviting you to join us in spreading the word and have set up several activities you can join us in or host yourself. Between now and April 28th WisCOSH will be seeking photo opportunities (union and other meetings, union actions, worker get togethers, etc) with workers showing their support for safe work in a healthy environment. If you and your coworkers wish to participate please drop us a line and let us know where and when and we will share your picture(s) during our Workers’ Memorial Week of Action (April 21 -28).
Has your workplace had a lot of injuries or illnesses? Were you or your coworkers determined to be “essential workers” and forced to work under dangerous conditions or without proper personal protective equipment or training? One of our photo opportunities we are seeking is to hold some “worker die-in” events to highlight to the general public those employers that care more about profit than human life. The Die-In would be of short duration at a time where the most notice will be taken so that the message gets across to as many people as possible. For more information or to set or join a Die-In please drop us a line.
WisCOSH also wants to hold a conversation with the community about workplace health and safety and its importance for all workers whether they are youth/teen, adults or seniors. In that vein we have several short videos as conversation starters for different aspects of protecting workers from injury, illness and death. We are hoping to hold several of these events. If you are interested in joining or hosting one of these events please drop us a line so we can discuss it further.
